Participation Requirements

I understand that in Online, attendance and class participation are two separate activities. The requirements are different. Attendance is taken only when I leave messages in the discussion area each week for the current unit as stated in the course calendar. My instructor(s) will notify the Online administration that I have posted messages and that I am "present" in that class. The Online administration tracks my attendance. I understand that I may be dismissed from class due to lack of attendance. I understand that the Online program is not bound by specific class times, that I am free to budget my own access to Bryant & Stratton's online server on various days of the week during any of the 24 hours in the day. I understand that I must adjust my schedule for brief absences (i.e. brief illnesses, death in the family, or holidays) so that I am still signing on the appropriate number of days per week. In addition, I understand that if I will be unable to access my usual computer internet service provider for more than 2 days in any week, it is my responsibility to make arrangements to connect to the internet via another computer in order to keep up with the Online course work. I understand that to earn a grade in an Online class, I need to:
  1. Plan on budgeting at least 6 hours per week inside Angel to read the lesson material from your instructor; find out assignment deadlines; post new messages and replies to classmates in a weekly discussion folder; post a “weekly summary” of learning in the discussion folder; complete quizzes, tests, and assignments; etc.
  2. In addition, plan on budgeting at least 6 hours per week (one hour outside of class for each hour spent in class) doing work outside of Angel to read the textbook, study for exams or quizzes, completing homework that is emailed to your instructor, researching and writing your course project (including locating additional websites or journal articles via the college’s Virtual Library), working in groups with classmates solving problems via the email system, etc.
  3. Participate in the Skills Improvement Processes for any and/or all of the term if I need individualized course-related support (through email messages to the Online instructor).
I also understand that a portion of my grade (determined by my instructor) will be based on my active participation with class discussion, groups or teams, my interaction with the instructor, and my completion work by specific deadlines. As an Online student at Bryant & Stratton College, I recognize that I must adhere to all of the course timeframes and deadlines as described by my instructor. I also understand that I will be marked "present" ONLY when I post messages in the discussion area each week for the current unit that is focused on the topic of the week as stated in the course calendar.
