A General and Operations Manager is a high-level employee who works to plan, direct and/or coordinate the operations of organizations in the private or public sector. These employees may also be called Facilities Managers, Production Managers, or Store Managers, among many other common job titles. Being employed in this capacity requires you to have a good understanding of all parts of an organization.
The job responsibilities of General and Operations Managers vary widely according to the type of company, facility or organization that employs them. However, in most employment settings they are responsible for a very wide range of duties. Overall, General and Operations managers are typically responsible for creating policies and/or enforcing policies established by senior executives. Budgeting, financial management, resource planning, human resources, and managing daily operations are the core of their daily duties. To meet those broad responsibilities, they perform any or all the following tasks in the workplace:

Training and other requirements for General and Operational Manager positions vary widely according to the demands of different industries and the preferences of individual employers. Most employers will require that candidates for these positions have a significant amount of work experience in a related field or position. This typically means working in lower-level management or supervisory jobs for 3 to 5 years.
Many employers prefer to hire candidates that have earned professional certifications, such the Certified Manager (CM) credential, that indicate a high level of knowledge and training in current management strategies and practices. Some employers may also prefer to hire candidates who have earned specialty certifications and/or licenses specifically related to their areas of management. This may mean accounting certifications for management roles in finance firms, or hospitality/ food service certifications to work in hotel or restaurant management positions. Earning specialty certifications generally means meeting education and work experience requirements set forth by professional organizations and passing an exam.
